When you hear "making accessories with a 3D printer," I bet not many people immediately picture something beautiful. I certainly had a preconception that what came out of the machine would be prototype-level plastic scraps.
But when I actually made them, the results blew my expectations!

The Equipment and Materials Used
For this project, I used a household FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printer. The filament was PLA material in salmon pink. I deliberately chose a matte finish because I think it looks more elegant for accessories. I combined it with ready-made silver tassels and sourced clip-on earring findings from Amazon. The total cost for one set was about 500 yen.
My Thoughts on the Finished Product
Take a look at the petal details. I printed them with a 0.1mm pitch, and while you can see the layer lines if you look closely, they're practically unnoticeable when worn as an accessory. In fact, this subtle texture gives it a handmade feel. Embedding a Swarovski-style rhinestone in the center was also effective; the contrast between the matte texture and the stone's sparkle resulted in a surprisingly rich finish.
Cost Breakdown and Business Potential
The filament cost for one set of parts (two earrings) was about 150 yen. The tassels were 80 yen x 2, and the findings were 35 yen x 2, totaling approximately 380 yen. If sold for 1,500 to 2,000 yen, the profit margin is nearly 80%! Once you create the 3D data, you can easily produce variations in color and shape. Simply changing colors each season allows you to release new products. As a small-batch business, I feel this platform is quite excellent.
Improvements and Next Steps
I used super glue for attaching the findings, but I'm concerned about its strength for daily use. Next, I want to incorporate a snap-fit structure into the part design. Improving the surface gloss with a resin coating is another challenge I'll tackle next.
