“Remembering passwords is a pain”—this is practically a universal truth by now. Many of us rely on password managers like 1Password or Bitwarden, but the password system itself is reaching its limits. This is where Passkeys come in. Apple, Google, and Microsoft are all pushing hard to popularize this new authentication method.
What Exactly Are Passkeys?
Simply put, Passkeys let you log into services using your smartphone's biometric authentication (fingerprint or face) instead of a password. Technically, they're based on the FIDO2/WebAuthn standard and utilize public-key cryptography. For the user, it's as simple as a quick Face ID scan. No more typing passwords! Passkeys are also inherently resistant to phishing. Since a Passkey is tied to a specific domain, if you're redirected to a fake site, its Passkey won't exist, preventing authentication. This means even if you fall for a phishing email, you won't suffer any damage.

Passkey Adoption in 2026
As of March 2026, major services supporting Passkeys have significantly increased. Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, PayPal, GitHub, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Nintendo—a quick count reveals over 100 services are already on board. Notably, Google accounts have made Passkeys the default login method since late 2025, and some new account creations no longer require a password at all.
Remaining Challenges
However, Passkeys aren't a silver bullet. The biggest issue is device migration. Since Passkeys are stored on your device, switching from an iPhone to Android (or vice-versa) can make migration tricky. Another problem is the uneven adoption. While major tech companies are quick to adapt, many Japanese services (especially banks and government agencies) are still lagging behind.
